Dressing your windows can be really simple and my favourite way to dress them is with curtains. Although a lot of people prefer blinds these days, I find that curtains really help to draw a room in and make it feel cosy. I’ve noticed that a lot of people don’t know how to find the perfect pair of curtains for their living room recently so I thought I’d put this article together to explain to you the process that I go through.
I find it really important to make sure that my windows look nice as they’re one of the first things that people see when they come inside your home. I’m always refreshing my window dressings and I’m always on the hunt for my next pair of curtains. My friends joke that I change them more than I change my socks!
Keeping up to date with curtain trends can be really easy. I do it in a number of different ways. The first way I do it is by buying home style magazines – although they can be full of a lot of useless tips, I do like to take a look at how they dress the curtains in the images, it helps to inspire my next purchase. Another thing I do is take a look at blogs online, I like to read other people’s take on window dressing ideas. Take a look at Pinterest too as there are some really creative ideas on there.
Sometimes people shy away from revamping the look of their curtains because they think it will cost them a small fortune but if you keep your eyes peeled on soft furnishing websites then you’ll spot lots of good offers and discount codes available often.
The first thing you need to think about when buying your curtains is the colour. This can change the whole feel of your room. Bright colours will work well in a modern space but for a traditional look go for pastel or neutral colours. I really like the curtains in my home to stand out to complement the contemporary look in my home so the brighter the better!
The next thing to decide about is the material. Thick materials such as chenille will create a really luxurious feel and will make your home look really glamorous. Materials such as silk will create a classy, sleek look and funky bright cotton curtains are sure to make your room pop.
Once you’ve bought your curtains, you’ll have to find some tie backs to match – make sure that they’ll be able to hold the weight of your curtains easily and will complement the design of the curtain.
If like a lot of people, you like to watch films in your living room then it’s a really good idea to add blackout curtain linings to your curtains to block out sunlight and create your own little cinema! I also add blackout curtain linings to the curtains in my little girls room as when light nights roll around she can never get to sleep.
